Tesla Picks Berlin-Köpenick for European Development Center

The move clusters core engineering disciplines near the Grünheide factory for tighter production links.

Overview

  • Tesla has applied for permits to renovate an existing roughly 20,000-square-meter facility in Köpenick, with construction to begin after approvals.
  • About 130 engineers will relocate initially from Grünheide and smaller Berlin sites, with headcount planned to grow to around 250 in the coming years.
  • The new center will focus on material research as well as vehicle and drivetrain development to support European engineering needs.
  • Lars Moravy said early technical tests could start once the site is ready, with limited activity possible in 2025 and fuller operations expected in 2026.
  • Tesla chose the site after assessing more than three dozen options, citing expansion potential, strong power supply, rail access, and proximity to Grünheide, and it projects a high double-digit million-euro investment.
