Tesla Obtains Texas Robotaxi License and Readies Public Service in September

After refining its Full Self-Driving software in Austin, Tesla will begin statewide driverless service under standardized regulations.

  • Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation granted Tesla a statewide Transportation Network Company license on August 7, allowing driverless robotaxi operations.
  • Elon Musk said the invite-only Austin pilot will open to the public in September, transitioning to open access for all registered users.
  • Tesla has doubled its Austin geofenced service area, introduced dynamic distance-based pricing and deployed front-seat safety monitors in its pilot fleet.
  • Arizona’s Department of Transportation is reviewing Tesla’s autonomous operations application with a decision expected by month’s end, and applications in Nevada, California’s Bay Area and Florida are also under review.
  • Tesla expects to extend its robotaxi service to cover roughly half of the U.S. population by year-end, pending regulatory approvals in new markets.
