Tesla Names Ex-Lamborghini India Chief Sharad Agarwal as Country Head

The on-the-ground appointment signals a pivot to a premium-first, locally led strategy in a market restrained by steep import duties.

Overview

  • Agarwal, who led Lamborghini India and most recently worked at Mahindra’s Classic Legends, starts in the role this week, according to multiple reports.
  • Tesla is moving from remote oversight by executives in China and regional hubs to full-time leadership based in India following the May resignation of country head Prashanth Menon.
  • Orders have been muted since sales began in mid-July, rising from just over 600 by September to a little over 800 by October.
  • High tariffs have pushed the Model Y’s effective price to around ₹60 lakh, well above the ₹20–25 lakh band where most EVs sell in India, with EVs accounting for just over 5% of total car sales.
  • After opening stores in Mumbai and New Delhi under Southeast Asia director Isabel Fan, Tesla has expanded pop-up displays in NCR malls including Gurugram, and the company and Agarwal have not commented on the appointment.
