Tesla Enables Home Backup From Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla links bidirectional charging to Powerwall 3 for new Model 3 and Model Y orders to give qualifying owners extra outage resilience.

Overview

  • Tesla announced Tuesday that Powershare Home Backup is now available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles when paired with a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector.
  • The company guarantees the feature for cars ordered on or after October 1, 2026 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and says older builds may lack the PCS2 Lite inverter needed to support Powershare.
  • Tesla says a Model 3 or Model Y can add roughly two days of backup for a typical U.S. household using about 30 kWh per day, while the Cybertruck can add more than three days and the system can deliver up to 11.52 kW continuously.
  • New Powerwall 3 plus Wall Connector installations can be enabled without extra hardware, but existing setups usually require an installer to confirm wiring or Tesla support to activate the feature.
  • The rollout brings vehicle-to-home power to Tesla’s high-volume cars but lags rivals such as Ford and GM, and tying the capability to Powerwall 3 and specific hardware limits fast, broad adoption among current Tesla owners.
