Overview
- Tesla's internal Full Self-Driving (FSD) ride-hailing pilot for employees has logged over 1,500 trips and 15,000 miles in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area.
- The company plans to launch a paid, supervised robotaxi service in Austin in June, starting with 10–20 Model Y vehicles equipped with FSD software.
- Tesla’s robotaxi service will include remote operators and safety drivers to intervene if needed, as the technology is not yet fully autonomous.
- The automaker is also developing a purpose-built Cybercab, designed without a steering wheel or pedals, with mass production expected in 2026 at a sub-$30,000 price point.
- Regulatory approval remains a challenge in California, where Tesla needs additional permits to expand its robotaxi services to the public.
