Tesco Scales Up Flu Jab Access as NHS Tells Feverish Patients to Wait

Free vaccination is available to eligible groups through GPs, the NHS App and pharmacies, with private options for those not eligible.

Overview

  • Tesco is offering the free NHS flu jab in more than 350 in‑store pharmacies with about 50,000 appointments each week, plus a £16 private jab for people aged 12 and over.
  • Other major chains including Asda, Boots, Superdrug and Morrisons are delivering the NHS service and also sell private vaccinations, with advertised prices typically ranging from around £12 to £22 depending on provider and offers.
  • The NHS advises postponing vaccination if you have a high temperature and says people with a history of anaphylaxis to a flu vaccine or its ingredients should not receive it, noting some vaccines contain egg protein.
  • Those eligible for a free NHS jab include people aged 65 and over, pregnant people, those with certain long‑term conditions, care home residents, main carers and people living with someone who has a weakened immune system, with many frontline health and social care workers vaccinated via employers.
  • Appointments can be booked through GP practices, the NHS App or participating pharmacies, the vaccine typically takes up to 14 days to work, and most side effects are mild and short‑lived.
