Tesco Pilots Avocado Ripeness Scanners in Five Stores

The short test aims to cut food waste by giving shoppers quick, reliable ripeness checks.

Overview

  • The Dutch-made OneThird device uses infrared to read internal ripeness in seconds and returns two clear results.
  • Scanners are live this week at Tesco’s Cheshunt, Colchester, Stratford-upon-Avon, Wokingham and Salisbury locations.
  • Tesco says the goal is to help customers pick for timing and reduce damage from squeezing that leads to waste.
  • The pilot was developed with supplier Westfalia Fruit and follows a year in which Tesco sold nearly 15 million more avocados.
  • Forbes reports the trial will run about a week, OneThird says it is in talks with other major UK retailers, and early online reaction is mixed.
