Tesco Confirms Per-Item Purchase Limits Across UK Stores

The retailer says the caps protect product availability across more than 2,900 UK stores.

Overview

  • Tesco’s website outlines a maximum purchase policy that limits how many of the same product a customer can buy in a single transaction.
  • Limits differ by product, with many items currently capped at 16 units per shop.
  • Examples listed include whole cucumbers, spring onions, Parmigiano Reggiano 200g, Greek-style yogurt 1kg, 4-pint semi-skimmed milk, white toastie bread, orange juice, wafer-thin ham, beef mince, chicken mince, peppers and tortilla wraps.
  • Reports note many shoppers were unaware of the rule, even as Tesco serves roughly 20 million Clubcard households nationwide.
  • Separately, Tesco is trialling a trolley weigh-bridge for Scan as You Shop in a very small number of stores, drawing some social-media criticism as the company says it aims to cut manual checks and queues.
