Tesco and Waitrose Recall Products Over Undeclared Allergens

Regulators, retailers warn people with mustard or oat or gluten allergies not to eat specified packs, offering full refunds on returned items.

Overview

  • Tesco recalled its Finest Caesar & Smoked Bacon Coleslaw 270g after some packs were found to contain Tesco Finest Four Cheese Potato Salad, which lists mustard that was not declared on the coleslaw label.
  • Waitrose recalled its 500g Rhubarb Crumble because the product contains oats and gluten that are not listed on the packaging, and the item’s home-freezing instructions mean some packs could still be in shoppers’ freezers.
  • The Food Standards Agency and Norfolk Trading Standards publicised the recalls and issued 'do not eat' warnings for anyone with the relevant allergies or coeliac disease.
  • Both supermarkets say the problem is limited to the specified batches and offer full refunds to customers, with Tesco confirming it will refund without a receipt.
  • Health groups warn undeclared allergens can cause severe reactions including anaphylaxis for mustard allergy and serious harm for people with coeliac disease, and the recalls point to a likely packing or labelling error in the supply chain.
