Tenth In-Custody Death of 2025 Reported at Rikers’ Vierno Center

Oversight agencies have opened reviews following the tenth death in city custody this year.

Overview

  • A captain and an officer found the man unresponsive in his cell at 12:25 a.m., and he was pronounced dead at 12:58 a.m. after resuscitation efforts.
  • The Department of Correction says the investigation is ongoing, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
  • Notifications went to the federal monitor, the Board of Correction, the State Attorney General’s Office, the City Department of Investigation, the State Commission of Correction, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and local district attorneys.
  • Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie offered condolences and said the department will conduct a full review of the incident.
  • The death is the tenth in DOC custody in 2025, following several earlier fatalities, and it comes as the city’s 2027 Rikers closure mandate remains in doubt.
