Tennessee Supreme Court Sets Sept. 30, 2026 Execution Date for Christa Pike, Only Woman on State Death Row

Her lawyers plan a clemency push citing youth plus mental illness.

Overview

  • Pike is ordered to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on Sept. 30, 2026, unless another court intervenes.
  • If carried out, it would be Tennessee’s first execution of a woman since 1819 and the 19th involving a woman in the modern U.S. era.
  • The court also scheduled executions for Tony Carruthers, Gary Sutton, and Anthony Hines as Tennessee resumed executions following a pause over untested lethal-injection drugs.
  • Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture killing of Colleen Slemmer at age 18; her co-defendants received either life with parole eligibility or probation.
  • By Aug. 28, corrections officials must inform Pike of the execution method, with lethal injection the default and electrocution permitted for pre-1999 crimes.
