Tennessee Releases 2023-24 School Letter Grades with Statewide and District-Level Insights

Over three-quarters of eligible Tennessee schools earned a C or better, while Memphis-Shelby County Schools showed notable improvements despite challenges.

  • The Tennessee Department of Education released letter grades for 1,693 eligible schools, with 290 schools earning A’s, 484 B’s, 508 C’s, 330 D’s, and 78 F’s.
  • Statewide, 79% of eligible schools achieved a grade of C or higher, consistent with last year’s results under the updated grading formula emphasizing academic achievement over growth.
  • Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) saw the number of schools earning A’s rise from nine to 16, and A’s and B’s combined increase from 40 to 57, while the number of F’s dropped from 41 to 22.
  • MSCS also reported an improved graduation rate, climbing from 26.2% in 2021-22 to 36.6% in 2022-23, alongside recognition for 24 schools achieving reward school status, the state’s top distinction.
  • Schools with D or F grades may face corrective actions, such as audits or intervention plans, though these measures will not take effect until the 2025-26 school year.
