Tennessee Names True Freshman Faizon Brandon as Week 1 Starter

The move hands an 18-year-old the keys for a heavily favored Vols offense in a Sept. 5 opener and puts Jim Knowles’s new defensive scheme into its first live test.

Overview

  • Coach Josh Heupel announced on Aug. 24 that five-star true freshman Faizon Brandon earned the Week 1 start over sophomore George MacIntyre and transfer Ryan Staub.
  • Tennessee will host Furman at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 5 with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET and national coverage on SEC Network/SEC Network+.
  • Preseason models and betting markets heavily favor Tennessee, with ESPN’s matchup predictor and Nolan Analytics projecting lopsided Vols wins.
  • Jim Knowles will call his first game as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator while linebacker Arion Carter serves a one-game suspension for an improper benefit.
  • The start continues a youth-driven transition at quarterback but Tennessee’s experienced offensive line and running game mean staffers plan to keep evaluating Brandon in game action.
