Overview
- Ten activists abseiled from the Forth Road Bridge around 1:05 pm on July 25 to block an Ineos tanker carrying 27,000 cubic metres of American fracked gas bound for Grangemouth.
- They unfurled six red “Plastics Treaty Now” banners and remained suspended roughly 25 metres above the water for a full tidal cycle, delaying the vessel for 24 hours.
- On the morning of July 26 all ten descended safely and were arrested by Police Scotland on suspicion of culpable and reckless conduct.
- The bridge remains closed to traffic as officers carry out safety inspections and further inquiries into the protest.
- Greenpeace said the action aimed to pressure Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to endorse a legally binding UN plastics treaty, while Ineos described the stunt as dangerous and defended its manufacturing operations.
