Temples Reopen Across India After Lunar Eclipse Closures; Select Shrines Kept Rites Going

Ritual law set the timetable, from Sutak closures to purification before reopening.

Overview

  • Tirumala’s Sri Venkateswara Temple shut at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and reopened around 2:40 a.m. Monday after shuddhi and Punyahavachanam, with darshan resuming from 6 a.m., according to TTD.
  • Temple boards in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana restarted darshan early Monday after cleansing rites, having canceled Sunday sevas and distributed about 50,000 pulihora packets while canteens were closed.
  • Uttarakhand’s Badrinath and Kedarnath, closed at 12:58 p.m. Sunday with Sutak, scheduled early-morning reopening after purification, with ITBP assisting post-eclipse cleaning at Jyotirmath, officials said.
  • Some exceptions stayed open during the eclipse on doctrinal grounds, including Srikalahasti, where priests performed Grahana Kalabhishekam and RahuKetu pujas privately without allowing public access.
  • Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir announced it would remain closed through the eclipse and reopen Monday morning with Mangala Aarti, matching widespread closures reported nationwide.
