Teltumbde Withdraws Overseas Travel Plea After Bombay High Court's Disinclination

The court pointed to an absconding risk flagged by the NIA, urging virtual delivery of the lectures.

Overview

  • Anand Teltumbde pulled his request to travel abroad for academic engagements after a Bombay High Court bench said it was not inclined to allow in-person visits.
  • Justices A. S. Gadkari and Ranjitsinha Bhonsale suggested he participate virtually, with Justice Gadkari remarking, “Either give virtual lectures or don’t go.”
  • The NIA, represented by special counsel Chintan Shah, opposed the plea citing a likelihood of absconding and argued that any talks could be delivered online.
  • Teltumbde’s petition cited invitations from institutions including the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Nottingham Trent University, Oxford, the University of Edinburgh, and University College London.
  • The bench noted his discharge application was recently rejected by the special NIA court and said the issue could be raised in his pending High Court appeal, with liberty reserved to file a fresh travel request later.
