Telstra Mobile Network Experiences Widespread Outage

An investigation by Telstra may determine whether regulator action follows

Overview

  • Early-morning AEST reports and Downdetector data show a large surge in outage reports that began around 5am with a further spike before 6am.
  • Telstra has acknowledged the problem, said it is investigating an issue affecting some mobile calls and data connections, and asked customers to retry connections while it works on a fix.
  • Customers of several MVNOs that use Telstra’s network, including Boost, Aldi Mobile, Tangerine, Belong and Everyday Mobile, are also reporting loss of voice and data service.
  • Calls to Triple Zero (000) are being routed through other providers’ networks and are reported to remain available despite the disruption.
  • Telstra runs Australia’s largest mobile network with about 24.9 million retail mobile services and faces increased public and regulator scrutiny after a more than $3 million fine in 2024 for a previous outage.
