Television Academy Creates Legacy Award for Programs With Lasting Impact

The move marks the Academy’s first new honorary Emmy in nearly two decades.

Overview

  • Candidates will be chosen annually by the renamed Special Awards Committee and then voted on by the Board of Governors, with submissions accepted from governors, the committee, or individuals via letter.
  • Eligibility requires at least 60 episodes over a minimum of five seasons and demonstrable sustained relevance or influence, with franchises considered as a single entity and no program eligible more than once.
  • Recipients will receive engraved Emmy statuettes consistent with other special Television Academy honors.
  • The Academy has not set where or when the award will debut, noting potential presentation at the Creative Arts Emmys, the Primetime telecast, the Televerse event, or the Hall of Fame ceremony.
  • The honor can recognize shows still airing or those that ended years ago, according to TV Academy President Maury McIntyre.
