Telangana Vows to Block AP’s Polavaram–Banakacharla Link After Filing Objections

The state says it has lodged its objections with the Union Jal Shakti Ministry.

Overview

  • Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress government will not permit the Banakacharla project and has submitted written objections to Union Minister C. R. Patil.
  • Uttam Kumar Reddy asserted that Telangana, Maharashtra and other co-basin states have communicated opposition to the proposed link.
  • He accused the previous BRS government of conceding an unfavorable Krishna allocation to Andhra Pradesh and said Telangana has now argued for a larger share before the KWDT-II.
  • The minister added that Telangana will oppose any move to raise the Almatti dam height in Karnataka.
  • BRS leader T. Harish Rao alleged that the Centre is examining Andhra Pradesh’s feasibility report, claimed AP has floated DPR tenders for the link, and warned that redefining ‘flood water’ would jeopardize Telangana’s entitlements.
