Telangana vows to block Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari-Banakacherla link project
Telangana has appealed to central water authorities to halt the Rs80,000 crore project to divert surplus Godavari water
Overview
- Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the state will not accept the project under any circumstances
- Telangana lodged formal objections with the Godavari River Management Board and urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to stop the plan
- On May 23, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu submitted the Polavaram–Banakacherla link proposal seeking central approval to redirect 200 TMC of water
- The Rs80,000 crore scheme would expand Polavaram headworks to interlink the Godavari, Krishna and Penna rivers using lift irrigation and tunnels across three phases, with a detailed project report due this month
- Telangana argues the proposal breaches the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award and could reduce its rightful share of river water
