Telangana Urges Centre to Reject Andhra’s Renamed Godavari Link Project

Telangana says the rebranded scheme rests on an unrecognized ‘flood waters’ claim that could distort water allocations.

Overview

  • Irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met Union Jal Shakti minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on November 18 to seek rejection of Andhra Pradesh’s modified Polavaram–Banakacharla link, now ending at Nallamalasagar.
  • Telangana argues the name and terminal shift do not change the project’s substance and says the reliance on ‘flood waters’ has no sanction under the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal or NITI Aayog guidelines for DPRs.
  • The state reaffirmed its formal objections on record and noted Maharashtra and Karnataka had raised earlier objections, warning broader acceptance of such claims could erode Telangana’s share.
  • Reddy asked the Central Water Commission to fast-track clearances for the Palamuru–Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme after Telangana submitted a DPR based on a proposed reallocation of 90 tmc ft and responded to queries.
  • Telangana also pressed for approval of seven PMKSY–AIBP proposals for 2026–31, with four projects—Mukteshwar LIS, Chanaka–Korata, Modikuntavagu and Sitammasagar—cleared as techno-economically viable and now filed for investment clearance.
