Telangana to Detain Spurious Seed Sellers Under Preventive Detention Act

A joint task force of police alongside seed authorities will enforce bans through raids, prosecutions, property seizures.

  • Director-General of Police Jitender announced that cases against counterfeit seed vendors will be booked under the Preventive Detention Act.
  • A district-level Joint Task Force with police, agriculture and seeds corporation officials has been deployed to target fake and unapproved herbicide-tolerant seeds.
  • Recent operations in Vikarabad, Gadwal, Rachakonda, Warangal and Ramagundam yielded large hauls of spurious seeds and illegally manufactured pesticides.
  • Authorities are invoking the Seeds Act 1966, Environmental Protection Act 1986, Essential Commodities Act and relevant IPC provisions to pursue offenders.
  • Properties used for manufacturing, storing or selling counterfeit seeds are being seized under Section 152(1)(b) of BNSS to deter future violations.
