Telangana Sets Three-Phase Gram Panchayat Polls for December 11, 14 and 17

The process resumes under the earlier reservation matrix after attempts to expand BC quotas failed to secure required approvals.

Overview

  • The State Election Commission announced the schedule and said the election code of conduct took immediate effect across Telangana.
  • Nominations open on November 27, November 30 and December 3 for the three phases, with filing deadlines on November 29, December 2 and December 5.
  • Phase one covers 4,236 Sarpanch and 37,440 ward member posts, phase two covers 4,333 and 38,350, and phase three covers 4,159 and 36,452, respectively.
  • The polls will follow the existing reservation pattern after proposed 42% BC quotas did not receive presidential assent and an ordinance was set aside, and the ruling Congress says it will back BC candidates in general seats.
  • Voting will be held for 12,728 panchayats and about 1.12 lakh wards, with over 1.66 crore voters eligible, while specified gram panchayats in Mulugu, Karimnagar and Khammam remain excluded due to court orders and earlier issues.
