Telangana Set for Stormy Assembly Session as KCR Returns, January Rallies on Water Rights

Water disputes alongside investigations set Congress and BRS on a collision course.

Overview

  • The winter session begins Monday, December 29, with river water and irrigation set to dominate debates, and the House will pause for a New Year break before resuming on January 2.
  • K. Chandrasekhar Rao will attend the session after months out of the spotlight and has directed a statewide agitation focused on irrigation, including a large meeting near Mahabubnagar in the second week of January.
  • Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has publicly challenged KCR to debate in the House and vowed to prevent his family’s return to power, while BRS plans to press its case on the Palamuru–Rangareddy project and water-sharing.
  • The government has sought CBI involvement over alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project and constituted a fresh SIT on the phone-tapping case under Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar.
  • Media reports say the SIT may summon KCR, K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao in the phone-tapping probe, and the Governor has permitted ACB prosecution of KTR in the Formula E matter.
