Telangana Police Put BRS Leaders Under House Arrest Ahead of Bus-Fare Protest

The opposition planned a bus ride to Bus Bhavan to demand a rollback of a fare increase introduced to fund an electric-bus expansion.

Overview

  • Senior BRS figures including K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao were confined to their homes in Hyderabad on Thursday morning before the party’s ‘Chalo Bus Bhavan’ action.
  • Large contingents of police were posted outside multiple BRS leaders’ residences from around 6 a.m., preventing them from joining the demonstration.
  • BRS leaders had planned to board RTC buses from Rethifile in Secunderabad and Mehdipatnam to reach the TGSRTC headquarters and submit a memorandum to the Managing Director.
  • TGSRTC’s fare revision took effect on October 6, adding Rs 5 for early stages and Rs 10 for later stages on many city services to support an electric-bus rollout.
  • K. T. Rama Rao posted images of police outside his home and said the hike imposed roughly Rs 500 a month in extra costs per passenger, while the party vowed to continue its agitation.
