Telangana Orders Stop-Use of Almont-Kid Syrup After Ethylene Glycol Found

The move follows a CDSCO Kolkata lab report flagging contamination in batch AL-24002 from a Bihar-based manufacturer.

Overview

  • The Telangana Drugs Control Administration issued an urgent notice directing a statewide freeze on stocks of the specified batch and prohibiting any dispensing or sale.
  • The affected product is Almont-Kid Syrup (levocetirizine and montelukast), batch AL-24002, manufactured in January 2025 with expiry in December 2026 by Tridus Remedies of Vaishali (Hajipur), Bihar.
  • Authorities advised the public to stop using the syrup if in possession and to report it to local regulators or via the TGDCA toll-free number 1800-599-6969, which operates on working days from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Ethylene glycol is a highly toxic substance, and reports note its close relation to diethylene glycol, which has been linked to past child fatalities, prompting heightened public-health caution.
  • Enforcement and monitoring are ongoing in Telangana, and separately the Union Health Ministry has issued a draft proposal to tighten rules by removing the word 'syrup' from Schedule K and seeking public comments.
