Telangana on Alert After Medak Cloudburst as Monsoon Revival Triggers Multi-State Warnings

A Bay of Bengal low-pressure system is driving fresh spells, with the weather office forecasting very heavy rain in pockets through next week.

Overview

  • IMD issued an orange alert for Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy on Saturday and a yellow alert for 19 other Telangana districts including Hyderabad.
  • Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs saw gate operations as inflows surged, with Osmansagar and Himayatsagar releasing water after levels neared full capacity.
  • Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed coordinated rescue and evacuation efforts across HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, fire, traffic and police; officials shifted students and residents from inundated low-lying areas in Medak.
  • A pre-dawn cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur buried vehicles and damaged farmlands without reported casualties, as authorities flagged heavy rain risk and reported hundreds of roads shut.
  • Fresh and strengthening systems over the Bay of Bengal prompted alerts in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Arunachal and Odisha, with Mumbai under yellow/orange warnings for September 13–14 and Bengaluru on a yellow alert with recent waterlogging.
