Telangana Lays Foundation for MunneruPalair Link, Targets January 2027 Completion

The gravity canal is designed to move up to 50 tmc ft of Munneru floodwater to Palair without pumping.

Overview

  • Work began with a foundation stone ceremony at Maddupally in Edulapuram mandal, with the irrigation minister committing to finish the project by January 2027.
  • The 9.6 km link will run from the Munneru checkdam at Mulkanoor to the Palair reservoir with a 4,500 cusecs capacity enabled by natural elevation.
  • Officials say the scheme will divert surplus floodwater to curb flash flooding in Khammam and increase storage at Palair.
  • Irrigation supply is slated to be stabilised for about 1.38 lakh acres downstream of Palair and 40,000 acres upstream under the NSP command area.
  • Plans include 4.70 tmc ft a year for Mission Bhagiratha, projected annual power savings of about ₹120 crore for the Sita Rama lift scheme, and roughly 2 MW of hydropower generation.
