Telangana Lays Foundation for ₹600 Cr Jawahar Scheme and Expedites Devadula to Counter Andhra’s 11 TMC Diversions

Having tabled the Ghose Commission report for debate, the state government accelerates lift irrigation projects to defend its Godavari water entitlements.

Overview

  • Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka laid the foundation stone for the ₹600 crore Jawahar Lift Irrigation Scheme to irrigate about 30,000 acres and warned that Andhra’s 11 TMC-a-day Pothireddypadu diversions could empty the Srisailam reservoir within 25 days.
  • Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reported that the J. Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme’s revised cost is ₹18,500 crore, with ₹14,168 crore spent and an urgent ₹4,331 crore needed to clear contractor dues and finish pending works.
  • The Telangana cabinet approved a summary of the multi-hundred-page Ghose Commission report, which holds former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao solely responsible for design and construction failures on the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages.
  • Contractors have been directed to cover defect‐rectification costs identified by the National Dam Safety Authority, while phased funds and land acquisition measures are being fast-tracked to complete critical lift schemes.
  • BRS leaders have accused the Congress government of stalling Kaleshwaram operations and spotlighted a severe urea shortage for farmers, threatening statewide agitations over water and fertilizer access.
