Telangana Launches VTEM Aerial Survey to De-Risk SLBC Tunnel Restart

The mapping aims to pinpoint subsurface hazards to guide a safe return to excavation.

Overview

  • Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched the helicopter-borne survey in Nagarkurnool, with NGRI conducting data collection along the SLBC alignment.
  • The VTEM Plus system uses a 24‑metre transmitter loop over roughly 200 km to image up to 800–1,000 metres deep and identify shear zones or trapped water.
  • Work remains paused after the February 22 collapse that flooded about 2.5 km of Tunnel‑1, buried a 130‑metre TBM, and killed eight workers.
  • A high‑level committee’s safety recommendations were approved by the Cabinet with a mid‑2028 completion target, and excavation methods are under review.
  • The government set a December 31 deadline to resolve resettlement issues, cited a revised cost of ₹4,600 crore, and appointed Lt. Gen. Harpal Singh (Retd.) and Col. Parikshit Mehra for technical oversight.
