Telangana Launches Godavari Phase II–III to Boost Hyderabad Water, Clean Musi

The rollout intensified a political fight with BRS over the source and cost of the scheme.

Overview

  • Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy laid the foundation for Godavari Phase II and III to bring 20 TMC to Hyderabad, a ₹7,360 crore build targeted for completion in about two years.
  • Officials said the project will replenish Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar to aid Musi river rejuvenation, with separate briefings citing splits of 17.5/2.5 TMC or 16/4 TMC for drinking water and cleansing flows.
  • The government asserts water will be drawn from the Sripada Yellampally project, while BRS leaders contend it relies on Mallanna Sagar/Kaleshwaram assets and accuse the state of inflating costs to about ₹7,390 crore; a CBI probe into Kaleshwaram has been reported.
  • Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said rehabilitation of the Kaleshwaram barrages at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla will begin after the flood season based on NDSA recommendations with expert validation.
  • Alongside, the ORR Drinking Water Supply Project (Phase II) of about ₹1,200 crore was inaugurated, with 15 of 71 reservoirs opened to serve roughly 25 lakh people across 14 mandals.
