Telangana Launches Electronic Family Register

Officials say a MeeSeva‑issued Family Register Certificate will ease documentation for citizens during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision that begins on August 10.

Overview

  • The state Revenue Department issued G.O. Ms. No. 172 on July 25 to create a statewide electronic Telangana Family Register using the Food Security Card (ration card) database.
  • The register will use the ration card number as a Family Register Identification Number and record names, relationships, ages, dates of birth, Aadhaar numbers and addresses drawn from the civil supplies database.
  • The Family Register Certificate (FRC) is available through MeeSeva for a reported fee of about Rs.62, routes applications to the local tahsildar and is to be processed within two working days.
  • Telangana officials and minority leaders have welcomed the FRC as a way to reduce paperwork and to support voters in the SIR claims and objections phase, while the BJP has formally asked the Election Commission not to accept FRCs during the ongoing revision, creating an active political and legal dispute.
  • MeeSeva centres have reported a surge in FRC applications and officials say the certificate is not meant to confer property or scheme rights, but its timing before the SIR could affect how many voters can substantiate claims or avoid deletions on the rolls.
