Telangana Launches 45 Electric Buses to Boost RTC Profitability

Monthly allocations of ₹300-350 crore with support from the Mahalakshmi free travel scheme have bolstered the corporation’s finances

Overview

  • On June 9, the government flagged off 45 non-AC intercity electric buses in Suryapet under the 500-bus allotment from the National Electric Bus Programme.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said the Mahalakshmi Scheme has issued 182 crore zero-fare tickets and secured ₹6,088 crore in reimbursements, turning the RTC towards profit.
  • Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar highlighted new monthly allocations of ₹300-350 crore for bus acquisitions and employee welfare after a decade without fleet additions under the BRS administration.
  • A total of 79 electric buses have been sanctioned for the Suryapet depot to serve routes linking Hyderabad, Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar and Nizamabad.
  • State officials are planning to expand rural connectivity and consider retrofitting existing diesel buses to further modernize the public transport network.
