Telangana govt sets aside Tiger Conservation Reserve order following protest by tribal groups

Overview

  • On July 21, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy ordered GO49 to be kept in abeyance until further consultations after reports from three ministers.
  • A dawn-to-dusk bandh observed by Tudum Debba shut down schools, businesses and TSRTC buses across Adilabad, Nirmal, Kumram Bheem Asifabad and Mancherial districts.
  • Adivasi organisations say the reserve would displace over 330 tribal villages, violate rights under PESA and the Forest Rights Act, and threaten traditional livelihoods.
  • GO49 was issued on May 30 to create the Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve, aiming to protect a 1.49 lakh hectare tiger corridor between Kawal and Tadoba-Andhari reserves where four adult tigers and three cubs were recorded.
  • With the order suspended, government officials and tribal representatives will hold further talks while Adivasi leaders press for permanent cancellation.
