Overview

  • Litigant N. Peddi Raju and advocates Ritesh Patil and Nitin Meshram filed affidavits of unconditional apology before Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya.
  • Justice Bhattacharya accepted the apologies, recorded that the case is disposed of at her end, and directed the contemnors to place the matter before the Supreme Court.
  • The Supreme Court had initiated suo-motu contempt on July 30 over language used in a transfer plea and on August 11 ordered the apology and a hearing before the High Court judge.
  • In her order, Justice Bhattacharya warned that personal attacks on judges erode judicial dignity and noted that sincere remorse can remedy conduct that scandalises a court.
  • The contempt proceedings stemmed from a transfer bid tied to a case in which the Telangana High Court quashed an FIR against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
