Telangana Cyber Team Rescues 80-Year-Old Doctor’s Family From ‘Digital Arrest’ Extortion

Police have opened a technical investigation following the rescue of a family trapped by a WhatsApp impersonation scam.

Overview

  • TGCSB said cyber fraudsters posing as CBI officers held the Bhadrachalam family under a so-called digital arrest for three days.
  • The callers told Dr. Buddharaju Subbaraju that an Aadhaar-linked Mumbai bank account was tied to over 100 cases and kept the family on continuous video calls.
  • They extracted full banking details and pressured the victims to break fixed deposits and prepare transfers.
  • A nursing-home assistant alerted the District Cyber Crime Coordination Centre on November 23, after which Dy SP Ashok Babu and Inspector Jitender cut off the fraudsters’ contact and averted a major loss.
  • Cyber Crime Police are tracing IP addresses, examining call-routing and device identifiers, and advising the public to report such fraud to 1930 or the National Cybercrime Portal.
