Telangana Clears 42% BC Quota for Local Polls, to Table Bill Replacing Ordinance

The government cites a recent caste survey to defend breaching the 50% cap under a court-ordered election timeline.

Overview

  • SC and ST reservations in local bodies will be determined using the 2001 census population data.
  • The Assembly will take up a Bill on Sunday to replace the ordinance and amend the 2018 Panchayat Raj law that capped total quotas at 50%.
  • Officials said a Government Order will be issued after enactment, while earlier Bills and the ordinance seeking 42% BC reservations remain with the President for assent.
  • The Cabinet pointed to a state survey estimating BCs at about 56% of the population to justify exceeding the Supreme Court’s reservation limit.
  • The Cabinet also proposed MLC nominations for M. Kodandaram and Mohammad Azharuddin, and scheduled a September 1 review of damage from recent cloudbursts.
