Telangana Asks Centre to Stop Polavaram–Banakacherla Link as AP Advances DPR

Officials say the plan breaches core interstate water-sharing mandates.

Overview

  • Telangana’s Irrigation Department wrote to the Central Water Commission requesting an immediate halt to proceedings on Andhra Pradesh’s proposed Polavaram–Banakacherla Link Project.
  • The letter invokes the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 and the GWDT award of 1980, arguing the proposal violates statutory allocations and operating conditions for Polavaram.
  • Telangana’s objections include warnings of backwater effects, possible submergence of villages, and an alleged unauthorized diversion of roughly 200 TMC of Godavari water to the Krishna basin.
  • The Central Water Commission has circulated the project’s pre-feasibility report to GRMB, KRMB, the Polavaram Project Authority and all six riparian states for comments, while formal approvals remain pending.
  • Andhra Pradesh issued a Rs 92 crore tender on October 6 for the project’s Detailed Project Report, drawing political fire in Telangana, with BRS leader T. Harish Rao accusing the state government of inaction and citing a backdated letter.
