Telangana approves ₹51.52 crore compensation for farmers hit by unseasonal rains
Incomplete damage surveys have excluded many tenant farmers, prompting calls for increased compensation as well as a state-backed crop insurance scheme
Overview
- The government sanctioned ₹51.52 crore to compensate 41,361 farmers across 29 districts at a rate of ₹10,000 per acre.
- Rabi crops including paddy, maize and horticultural produce suffered widespread losses since mid-March, with Siddipet alone reporting nearly 20,000 acres damaged.
- Moisture-soaked paddy stocks at procurement centres in Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad and parts of Suryapet were rendered unfit for sale.
- Surveys in severely affected districts such as Nizamabad, Kamareddy and Warangal remain incomplete, leaving many tenant farmers without relief.
- Farmers and producer organisations are demanding higher rates of up to ₹20,000 per acre and the introduction of a state-backed crop insurance scheme.
