Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Intensify Inspections of Fertility Clinics After Surrogacy Fraud

Inspections of more than 65 IVF centres have assessed compliance with ART and Surrogacy Acts, with police pursuing suspects alongside fresh FIRs

  • A three-member panel led by the Health and Family Welfare Commissioner, the RAHCT CEO and the Director of Medical Education has been tasked with auditing all 381 private IVF and fertility centres in Telangana.
  • On August 2, 35 special teams conducted spot checks on 65 clinics to examine patient consent protocols, gamete sourcing and record-keeping under the Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Acts.
  • Andhra Pradesh health authorities completed reviews of 327 fertility centres and served show-cause notices to two facilities in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada for flouting statutory norms.
  • Hyderabad police have detained fertility doctor Dr. Athaluri Namratha and middleman Krishna as investigators uncover a network of falsified surrogacy arrangements and forged documents.
  • Four additional FIRs have been registered after domestic couples and NRI victims filed complaints alleging fraud, medical malpractice and financial extortion exceeding Rs 69 lakh.
