TEL Service Resumes After Two‑Hour Fault as SMRT Calls Spate of MRT Disruptions Isolated

SMRT labels the disruptions isolated, pledging joint audits with LTA to speed asset renewals.

Overview

  • Train service on the Thomson–East Coast Line between Woodlands North and Bayshore resumed around 9am after a signal fault caused roughly two hours of delays and a brief suspension.
  • Hours earlier, a signalling failure halted East–West Line services between Aljunied and Tanah Merah, which SMRT traced to a faulty backup power unit for the line’s electrical systems.
  • SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai apologised to commuters and said engineers will conduct technical audits of power, signalling, train and track systems with the Land Transport Authority.
  • The operator said it will strengthen lifecycle asset management and accelerate renewals, seek shorter recovery times without compromising safety, and improve on-the-ground communications.
  • During the incidents, free regular and bridging buses were deployed and commuters were advised to use alternative lines, as LTA data shows overall MRT reliability has fallen to a five‑year low.
