Tejasvi Surya Alleges Bengaluru Metro Used Wrong Base Year, Claims Rs 150 Crore Overcharge

BMRCL has promised a formal explanation following the accusation of flawed M&A cost calculations.

Overview

  • The Bengaluru South MP says BMRCL used 2016–17 instead of 2017–18 as the base year for maintenance and administration costs that fed into the Fare Fixation Committee report.
  • He estimates commuters have paid nearly Rs 150 crore extra since the recent fare revision because the slabs were inflated by the alleged error.
  • Surya highlights that the average increase was 51.5% but the common 8–15 km band rose by close to 70%, which he argues penalizes regular riders.
  • He cites comparisons showing Bengaluru charges more than other metros, including Rs 80 for 20–25 km versus Rs 64 for 32 km in Delhi and Rs 60 for 10–15 km versus Rs 30 for 12–18 km in Mumbai.
  • BMRCL officials told the MP they will share a formal explanation soon after his call for immediate rectification and transparency in fare-setting.
