Teesside Man Gets 12-Year Extended Sentence for Rape of Primary School-Aged Child

A Teesside judge ordered lifetime monitoring with strict restrictions after finding the 24-year-old poses an ongoing risk to children.

Overview

  • Kane Povey, 24, received an extended 12-year sentence made up of 11 years in custody and one year on licence.
  • He will be on the sex offenders' register for life under an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order with a restraining order barring contact with the victim and family.
  • Povey initially denied wrongdoing but changed his plea mid-trial in September, admitting three counts of rape of a child under 13 and three counts of causing or inciting sexual activity.
  • The judge cited a sexual attraction to children and limitations in development and impulse control, while the defence said Povey functions below his chronological age.
  • Cleveland Police said safeguarding was put in place from the outset and offered specialist support to the victim and family, praising the child's bravery in coming forward.
