Teenagers Star in Chelsea’s 5-1 Ajax Rout as Estêvão Sets Club UCL Record

The emphatic win is being cited as validation of Enzo Maresca’s youth-first project.

Overview

  • Chelsea became the first team in Champions League history to have three teenage scorers in one match, with Estêvão (18), Marc Guiu (19) and Tyrique George (19) all finding the net.
  • Estêvão converted a first-half penalty to become Chelsea’s youngest Champions League goalscorer at 18 years and 181 days, also ranking as the competition’s third-youngest penalty scorer and the second-youngest Brazilian to score.
  • Academy midfielder Reggie Walsh, aged 17 years and two days, came on to become Chelsea’s youngest Champions League player and the second-youngest Englishman to appear in the competition.
  • Maresca called it a “special night” and later told ESPN Brasil he believes Estêvão can one day compete for the Ballon d’Or, stressing the winger’s rapid adaptation and work habits.
  • Chelsea fielded this season’s youngest UCL starting XI and finished even younger, while Ajax played with 10 men from the 17th minute and Enzo Fernández’s decision to hand Estêvão the penalty highlighted strong dressing-room support.
