Overview

• Birmingham Crown Court sentenced Abdurrahman Summers, 19, and two 16-year-olds to life terms with minimum periods of 19, 17 and 15 years for the October killing in Marston Green.
• Judge Paul Farrer KC said Higgins was unarmed, tried to avoid confrontation and was chased into the Vape Minimarket before being attacked in a ten-second assault captured on poor-quality CCTV.
• As he was led away, Summers waved to the gallery and shouted "I'm still breathing" toward the jury box, after jurors earlier heard the group had "hunted him down".
• The court refused media requests to name the two juveniles, with the judge citing youth offending team evidence that identification would risk harm and hinder rehabilitation.
• Summers had prior robbery and knife convictions and was on licence at the time; prosecutors said one younger offender returned to steal the victim’s phone, which has not been recovered.
