Teenage Boy in Critical Condition After Shark Attack at Sydney Harbour’s Shark Beach

Authorities say the wounds suggest a large shark, with species identification underway.

Overview

  • The attack occurred about 4:20 p.m. near Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, where the boy, reported to be 12–13, was jumping from rocks outside the netted area.
  • Marine Area Command and Eastern Suburbs Police reached him within minutes, applied two tourniquets, and provided first aid on a police vessel before transfer to Rose Bay.
  • NSW Ambulance said he suffered critical injuries to both legs and was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.
  • Police closed Shark Beach and warned the public to avoid entering nearby waters as the response and investigation continue.
  • NSW’s Department of Primary Industries is assisting with shark identification; the beach’s seasonal net enclosure was repaired in early December after flood damage.
