Teenage Boy Critical After Shark Bite at Sydney Harbour's Shark Beach

Fisheries experts are expected to identify the species after police reported wounds consistent with a large shark.

Overview

  • The attack occurred around 4:20 pm Sunday near Shark Beach at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, Sydney Harbour.
  • Marine Area Command and Eastern Suburbs Police pulled the boy from the water within minutes, applied two tourniquets on a police vessel, and moved him to Rose Bay wharf.
  • NSW Ambulance, including aeromedical teams and a helicopter, transported him to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition with injuries to both legs.
  • Police said the injuries indicate a large shark, and authorities closed Shark Beach while advising swimmers to avoid nearby waters.
  • The NSW Department of Primary Industries is expected to assist with identifying the shark species, and reports suggest the boy was outside the netted enclosure.
