Overview
- The attack began shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday when a 16-year-old fired at a vehicle, shot through locked glass doors at Silver Rail Elementary and opened fire inside a special-needs classroom.
- Police and first responders found three children aged 5, 8 and 11 and one teacher dead at the scene, and they transported a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries.
- A community member, later identified as Kaylub Giamanco, pursued the shooter into the school and fatally shot him before responding officers entered, an action officials said helped stop further loss of life.
- Investigators say the attacker used a pump-action shotgun that law enforcement sources reported was purchased by the suspect’s mother, and the FBI and ATF have joined the Bend Police in tracing weapon access and searching for a motive.
- The district has closed schools, set up reunification and counseling services, and the long criminal probe is expected to continue as the community holds vigils and debates changes to school safety and firearms access.
