Teen Hiker Found Alive 5 Days After Disappearing on Brazil's Pico Paraná

Officials credit a massive volunteer-backed search for his safe recovery.

Overview

  • Rescue officials say Roberto Farias Thomaz, 19, reached a farm in the Antonina/Cacatu area after walking more than 12 miles through dense forest.
  • The hiker had no cellphone and only limited food and water while navigating the descent alone.
  • More than 100 firefighters, about 300 daily volunteers, specialist mountaineers and aircraft with thermal imaging searched the mountain over five days.
  • He was located on Monday and taken to hospital, where staff reported he was lucid with mild dehydration and bruising on his legs.
  • Authorities said the search began Jan. 1 after he became separated during the descent from Pico Paraná, and the governor publicly thanked responders and volunteers.
