Teen Held After Austin Shooting, Daylight Killing Reported in South Chicago

Police turn to Area detectives following an overnight Austin arrest, with a separate South Chicago homicide under review.

  • Officers on patrol heard gunfire around 1:18 a.m. in the first block of North Laramie Avenue in South Austin.
  • Responding police saw a 19-year-old running with a gun, apprehended him within minutes, and recovered the weapon.
  • An 18-year-old with a gunshot wound to the back was treated at the scene and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • In a separate incident around 8:45 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Baker Avenue, two people approached a man outside and opened fire.
  • The South Chicago victim was pronounced dead at the scene; charges are pending in the Austin case under Harrison/Area Four detectives, and Calumet detectives are investigating the homicide with no arrests reported.
